Advancing TWF’s Mission Through Learning and Leadership
We have some great news! Mariah Roberts, TWF’s Watershed Manager, will participate in the 21st Annual Indiana Watershed Leadership Academy (IWLA)—and she’s doing it with the support of a competitive scholarship from the Indiana Lakes Management Society (ILMS).
What is IWLA?
Founded in 2006, the Indiana Watershed Leadership Academy is a statewide program that aims to build the technical skills and leadership capacity of individuals working on water-related issues.
IWLA Class of 2006 samples fish species.
A diverse group of professionals comes together annually to work towards a common goal: healthier watersheds!
Participants often include:
Watershed coordinators and managers
City stormwater managers
County and state highway department staff
County surveyors, planners, commissioners, and other community officials
Civil engineers and drainage board members
Conservation agency staff
Extension educators
Soil and water conservation district staff
And many more!
Historically, the program has been funded through the IDEM Section 319 Grant Program; however, future funding for IWLA is uncertain following cuts announced in early 2025—making Mariah’s participation especially meaningful this year.
What Will Mariah Be Learning?
As part of IWLA, Mariah will participate in a rich learning experience that includes three in-person workshops, live virtual group sessions, and distance learning modules. The curriculum covers a wide range of watershed topics, from the basics to advanced concepts, including:
Leadership and communication skills
Watershed science
GIS and technology applications
Stakeholder engagement strategies
Policy and organizational development
Along the way, she’ll connect with topic experts from across the state—sharing ideas, building relationships, and learning new approaches to watershed management.
After completing the program, Mariah will earn a Professional Certificate in Watershed Management.
We couldn’t be more excited to see how this opportunity supports both Mariah’s professional growth and TWF’s mission to protect and improve local waters quality.
