Winona Lake’s beauty and health are being threatened by a major source of pollution: Peterson Ditch. Decades of watershed studies have identified this 13-mile inlet as the largest contributor of sediment and phosphorus — fueling algae blooms, murky water, invasive weeds, and loss of recreational enjoyment.
1 – Streambank erosion from Peterson Ditch pollutes Winona Lake with sediment and nutrients. We need to Ditch the Dirt!
This year, instead of waiting for limited state funds, The Watershed Foundation (TWF), in partnership with the Winona Lake Preservation Association (WLPA), is taking action. A comprehensive streambank stabilization study is underway, led by environmental consultants SWCA.
This study is
assessing the entire length of the ditch,
identifying the most erosion-prone areas and priorities, and
developing designs for three high-impact restoration projects.
The study will be completed in 2025, and with these results, TWF and WLPA will pursue state and local funding to implement the proposed solutions. The benefits to Winona Lake will be clear: reduced pollution, improved water clarity, stronger fish and wildlife habitat, and a more beautiful, enjoyable lake for all.
We need to raise $40,600 this year to complete this project. NOW is the time to get involved — your support and engagement will help make this a lasting success for Winona Lake.
