Gifts Through IRAs
Enjoy Tax Savings and Support Clean Water
Support TWF with a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your retirement account.
With a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), you can put your IRA to work for healthy lakes–and save on taxes too!
When you make a QCD, you transfer funds from your IRA directly to a qualified charitable organization like The Watershed Foundation. Unlike other IRA distributions from which you receive the funds, the money in a QCD goes straight to the organization. Though you can’t take a charitable deduction for a QCD, you can exclude a QCD from your taxable income–up to $100,000 annually, with some exceptions. Consult your tax advisor for guidance specific to your situation.
Who can make a QCD?
You must be age 70 ½ or older on the date you make a QCD gift.
Your IRA custodian or trustee must make the QCD on your behalf, and the money must be transferred directly to the organization you want to support. If an IRA owner takes a distribution and then donates it to charity, that distribution is considered taxable income, not a QCD.
If you’re at least 73, your QCD may also be counted toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year. If you’re required to take money from an IRA but don’t need it for living expenses, then a QCD can be a great way to meet your financial goals and support the organizations and causes you care about–including The Watershed Foundation!
If you are younger than 70 ½, you can still use your IRA to support TWF. Simply take a distribution and make your gift after taxes. You can also leave a legacy for your lakes by designating TWF as a beneficiary of your retirement plan.

How can you make a qualified charitable distribution to support The Watershed Foundation?
First, work with your financial advisor to decide if a QCD fits your needs. When you’re ready to make your gift, contact your IRA trustee and ask them to make a “qualified charitable distribution” to TWF on your behalf. Please be sure your trustee references your name and address, if possible. You can download this handy IRA QCD Form to start the process.
Have you already made a QCD to TWF?
If so, thank you! Please let us know so we can send you our appreciation and a receipt. Email admin@watershedfoundation.org or call 574-834-3242.
