Did you know that our watershed is home to lakes with islands?
Recently, TWF and our partners worked to restore damaged shorelines on three islands. The islands were undergoing severe erosion due to waves caused by wind energy, recreational activities (boating and jet skis), and harsh winters. As the islands eroded, a large amount of silt ended up in the lake, along with trees and their roots.
Kline Island, which is the largest island on Webster Lake and Loon Lake’s two islands were reconstructed and secured by volunteers. The “securing” utilizes natural materials to prevent further damage to the most harshly exposed areas of the islands. Close to 1,000 plants were planted on 300 ft of shoreline on Kline Island by 10 volunteers who braced themselves on a cold November morning. Terry Frederick, WLCA President, described the day as “very windy and cold- but exhilarating!” The native plants on the islands will grow this summer to form a root system to hold back erosion, and the rocks will help disperse wave action and keep the islands from eroding. Before the project, it is estimated to have lost 25 feet of land around the island in the last several years.
TWF worked with the Indiana DNR, Epworth Forest Church Camp, Webster Lake Conservation Association (WLCA), and the Loon Lake Property Owners Association (LLPOA) to obtain grants and money necessary to move forward with these projects. Make sure to keep an eye out for the improvements! Our lakes depend on responsible residents to keep them safe and healthy. Responsible boating – staying 200 ft. from shore when making a wake – especially near these critical areas, is appreciated. We couldn’t be happier with the success of these projects thanks to our many wonderful partners! Together we are making a difference in the health of these lakes and the entire watershed.

These projects will continue to prevent more than 2.2 million pounds of weeds & algae from growing in downstream lakes each year!
