Flooding Lakes Updates

Lake Flooding Spring 2013We went from drought to flood stage! With all of the heavy rain throughout the watershed last week, all of our area lakes are flooding.As of Monday, the IDNR issued an emergency order limiting motor boats to idle speed only on the Tippecanoe Lakes and the Barbee Chain of Lakes until the order is lifted.  See PDF attachment below.

 

If you are interested in seeing the water levels in real time, the US Geological Survey maintains two stream gauges on the Tippecanoe River in Kosciusko County.  Click here or on the graph to see the current water level and stream flow at the outlet of Lake TIppecanoe in Oswego.  As you can see, water levels coming out of Lake Tippecanoe are still rising.

Flood stage for the outlet of Lake Tippecanoe at Oswego is reached at 7.5 feet. Looking at the graph below, we have had 8 - 10 major flood events in the last 5 years. The worst flooding occurred in March 2009, with a height of 8.96 feet. The water level is currently at 8.41 feet, but more rain is predicted today.
